“Interested in JROTC?”

What is JROTC?
• JROTC is a military-based program that provides young people with instruction in aerospace studies, leadership education and unique training that exposes them to personality development, group dynamics, etc. It also informs students about the United States Air Force.

If I join JROTC, does that mean I have a greater chance of being recruited to the military?
• No, the JROTC program does not compel you to enter the military. This program is here to teach discipline, obedience, respect, and leadership; commonly used traits in the military. If you are interested in the military, joining JROTC would give you a step on those not in the program, plus give you an advance promotion once you enter the military.

What do you do in JROTC?
• In this program, you learn about aerospace science and leadership education. You are required to wear the JROTC uniform once a week (Tuesdays), and required to participate in the six functions we have every year; Military Ball, Dining In, Turkey Tussle, Change-of-Command, Veteran’s Day, and Early Morning Inspection. There are also other activities, such as TV show tapings, field trips, picnics, base visits, etc. that we participate in that you have the option of participating in. You are also taught the elements learned in other classes; such as math, English, grammar, history, and science. We also have a physical training program once a week. There is also a Summer Leadership school, held during the summer months for six to seven days, in conjunction with Blair High School and Pasadena High School that helps build discipline and team work.

How does this program benefit me?
• It tells students about the aerospace age.
• It helps develop informed citizens.
• It helps develop and strengthen character; as well as charisma (stage fright).
• It helps students understand their role in a democratic society.
• It informs students about the United States Air Force.
• If you are interested in attending college, it is considered a “bonus” on your college resume.
• It helps increase physical fitness for students.
• You will be able to participate in the Turkey Tussle; attend our annual Dining In and Military Ball; be a teacher and mentor to your fellow students; participate in marches and picnics against our rivalry schools (Pasadena High and Blair); meet a variety of people; and participate in our very own Special Teams (Color Guard, Drill Team, and Rifle Team).
• You will also have the opportunity to receive awards from organizations and the military, which can include money, plaques, medals, or ribbons.

What are the requirements to join?
You have to:
• Attend John Muir High School.
• Be a citizen or resident alien of the United States.
• Be of good morals.
• At least 14 years of age.
• Physically able to participate in AFJROTC training.
• Accepted by the two instructors of the JROTC program

Where and how do I sign up?
