SCHOLARSHIPS and Opportunities:
This scholarship page has the local scholarhips available to John Muir Students. Older scholarships are listed in the bottom section so that students can see what was available last year and will probably be available this year during that same month. 

Local Scholarships

1. COPA/Latinas for Education (Community Organization of Pasadena for Advancement) will award one Latina Senior with $1,000 at each high school.  
Please download the two page application.  Once the organization receives the applications, they will contact the candidates for an interview.  Winners will be announced in early May.

Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems, headquartered in Linthicum, Maryland, and with a facility in Azusa, California, has established a scholarship competition for high school students in San Gabriel Valley, California, who are entering college to pursue a degree in engineering.


This program will award two $10,000 scholarships (divided into $2500 over the course of 4 years) to two graduating high school students who live and attend school in San Gabriel Valley.  Each scholarship winner will also be invited to a recognition event at the end of the school year with Northrop Grumman leaders from the local Azusa facility.


Attached is a copy of the brochure to distribute to your math and science teachers to make the information available to students.  The completed application must be submitted by March 24, 2013 and can be obtained on line at http://www.northropgrumman.com/CorporateResponsibility/Community/Pages/EngScholars.aspx

Alpha Kappa Alpha Scholarship: Scholarships Are Now Available for African American Graduating High School Seniors (male and female).  Each Award Will be a Minimum of $1500.  You must download the application from http://aka-elo.org  

Once completed, the applicant should save the file under a different name (“save as…”), print out the Personal Information Sheet, attach a recent 2”X 2”photo (as indicated) to this  page, and submit the application, along with their Activities, Personal Essay and Letters of Recommendation, to Dr Gonzalez,  no later than February 21, 2014.



Delta Sigma Theta ScholarshipScholarships Are Now Available for African American Graduating High School Seniors (male and female).  Typed application with all required documentation by February 21, 2014. Candidates will be selected based on academic performance, community and school activities, letters of recommendation, essay and interview score. All information provided is confidential. The application for a 2014 academic award can be found on the Chapter website at:  www.dstpasadena.com under the Calendar of Events Tab – Academic Awards.  All applications MUST be completed online.


3. The Pasadena – Altadena Chapter of Links, Inc., Isaac McClelland Memorial Scholarship: Scholarships Are Now Available for African American Graduating High School Seniors (male and female) Scholarship $500 to $2,000. Selection Criteria: Academic Achievement and Financial Need.   Complete attached application and return it to Dr. Gonzalez by Feb 28, 2014.

ELKS scholarship:please go to 
elks.org.  In the middle of the page you will find a link that states Elk Scholars Elks Scholarships.  Click on the link to get directions and access to the application.  Once completed online, the student need only print the application, attach the other required documents, and bring it to the lodge.  The deadline is 4:00 pm on Friday, December 6, 2013.

The 2013-2014 Edison Scholars application opens on Oct. 1 and runs through Jan. 10, 2014. High school seniors who have Edison service (Altadena) may apply. Students need to visit www.scholarsapply.org/edisonscholars and complete the application online.  Graduating high school students who plan to study the STEM (science, technology, engineering or math) fields and come from low-income families are encouraged to apply for the 30 available scholarships.

Older Scholarships:
Women in Action, Jackie Robinson Merit Award-scholarship available to African American  seniors who have attended PUSD since 10th grade, have attended the same high school for 11th and 12th grades, 2.0 minimum GPA , self-improvement and good attendance.  Due March 15, 2013

Altadena/Pasadena Links - Scholarship available to African American MUIR Students who will be entering a four year college or university.  Student must demonstrate academic achievement and financial need. Due March 15, 2013

Italian Catholic Federation-$400 scholarship available to Catholic seniors of Italian descent with 3.2 GPA. Due March 15, 2013

Foothill Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta – Merit scholarship- Available to African American Seniors with a 2.75+ GPA and college acceptance.  Due Feb 25, 2013. Local scholarship for application, email www.dstfac@gmail.com

The Pasadena Bar Association is having its Annual Speech Scholarship Contest.  The first place winner will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship and the second place winner will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship.  The Speech Scholarship Contest provides high school students with an invaluable opportunity to speak before attorneys and Judges. Junior or Senior students must prepare a 7 min speech on a topic (Media and the Courtroom, public protest, or Classifield information). Must apply by March 29th. Pasadena Foothill Association of Realtors- local scholarship available to area students who have demonstrated high academics, extracurricular activities, and community participation.   Must write an Essay. Due April 15, 2013, 4:30 pm

Leon Conerly Scholarship- available to students who demonstrate good citizenship and have an emphasis on community service.  Student must plan to attend a two or four year college and have a minimum 2.5 GPA  Due April 26, 2013

Brandon Jackson Scholarship Available to  college bound Muir Seniors with a Minimum 2.5 GPA and financial need.  Must fill out application, have letters of rec and essay.  Due by May 1, 2013.

Kappa Alpha Psi - Scholarship available for male African American High School Seniors who demonstrate potential for success and who will attend a four year college. Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and have satisfactory citizenship. Mandatory Interview. Due March 8, 2013

ECLIPSE Scholarship- $1,000 scholarship available to college bound African American seniors with a 2.0 GPA or higher.  Must be postmarked by March 09, 2013

  The Jeff Sein Kwan Yang Memorial Scholarship application is available on http://www.jeffyangscholarship.com/  The deadline this year is JUNE 30, 2012.

Scholarship Requirements
The Jeff Sein Kwan Yang Memorial Scholarship is available to graduating high school seniors who meet the following requirements:
1) Graduating from a San Gabriel Valley high school;
2) An immigrant or child of an immigrant; AND
3) Committed to serving the immigrant community in some aspect.
It is open to students of all ethnic backgrounds. Students from low income or working class families are especially encouraged to apply.
Recipient(s) will receive five hundred dollars ($500) to use for tuition and educational fees. The awardee will be notified in two weeks from the time of the application deadline.

USC Summer residential Program- Available to 9-11th grade students. Must show financial need or high academics.  One or two week Program  of college and carreer readiness including college admissions, financial aide and scholarships, academic skills dev, and college life at USC.

The Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation is unique in that it offers scholarships to single mothers, children who attend alternative schools, students who have earned a GED, students with grade point averages of

The scholarships vary in criteria, award amounts, and deadline dates, but are available from over 100 different companies, organizations, and foundations.   Combined, the scholarships amount to more than $5 million in funding for minority students.  www.BlackStudents.com
